John,
The events of the past week have been unprecedented. I’m sure that you, like me, are still processing the gravity of what happened. It was an attack by the Executive on the legislative branch. One branch of our government physically attacking another branch of American government is inconceivable. But it has happened. It can’t be business as usual in our country. In the words of American patriot Patrick Henry, “Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country."
I wish I could say the events of this week were a surprise, but the truth is that I and other Democrats have been warning about the danger President Trump posed for years.
Two years ago I said: “Our democracy, tetters on the brink of failure. The lofty ideals of freedom and liberty that America was founded on has been overtaken by a vigorous resurgence of bigotry, hate, cruelty, and ignorance. Chaos and confusion rule the day, while lies and deception flourish, as complicit leaders stand silent — protecting their own power and privilege rather than fulfilling their oaths to defend the constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. A powerful domestic energy has emerged from the deep shadows of America [...] where Americans elected an authoritarian, anti-immigrant, racist, strongman to the nation’s highest office.”
I was criticized for this speech, John. But on Wednesday, chaos and confusion did indeed rule the day as Donald Trump unleashed his mob onto the US Capitol, telling them to “be wild.” He refused to condemn their actions, saying he “loved them” and that their actions were “what happens” when he loses an election.
They stormed the US Capitol, many with firearms, or massive zip ties for no obvious purpose other than taking hostages. They erected a gallows on the grounds, and the President is said to have watched it all with glee on cable TV.
Enough is enough, John. I voted to impeach Donald Trump last year because I knew he was a danger to our country. Now he has proven, yet again, that he is a danger to our country. Five people lay dead from his mob, including a police officer who was defending the Capitol from Trump’s lawless mob.
I intend to vote for his impeachment and am helping to lead the impeachment effort. I will also fight to ensure all those involved in this sordid day are held accountable. If you stand with me, will you sign my petition demanding the urgent removal of Donald Trump?
In solidarity,
Hank
