Friends,
This week, the Trump administration concluded their goal to open up drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) by selling off the land at rock-bottom prices for only $14.4 million with nearly every lease going for the minimum bid.
The auction was part of the Trump administration’s effort to sell off as much public land to Big Oil corporations as possible before he leaves office on January 20th. In their hurry to hand over public lands to special interests, the Trump administration bypassed the required time for public comment and even refused to accept comments online during a global pandemic.
Allowing oil drilling in ANWR would be devastating to the region’s wildlife, the world’s climate, and lands held sacred by Indigenous people. It’s so dangerous that even big banks like Bank of America and Goldman Sachs have pledged not to fund any drilling projects in the refuge.
The majority of the land was leased to Alaska's state-owned economic development corporation, the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority. We are calling on the governor of Alaska and the state government to commit to not developing the land they have leased.
Here at Western Values Project, we will be monitoring this situation closely. Make sure to follow us on social media for the latest updates, and share our posts to help get the word out about this dangerous plan.
