John,
After spending the entire post-election period lying about the integrity of our elections and attempting to overturn our democracy, Republicans finally whipped their supporters into a violent frenzy that led to five deaths at the Capitol on Wednesday.
This isn’t new. Ronald Reagan warned that Medicare would lead to “spend[ing] our sunset years telling our children, and our children’s children, what it once was like in America when men were free.”1 And while there are certainly different levels to political rhetoric, Trump and his sycophants in Congress took this to a new level, resulting in bloodshed and a seditionist attack on our democracy.
Donald Trump must be impeached and removed immediately. But the Republican members of Congress who added to the incitement of Wednesday’s riot must also face consequences.
This isn’t normal politics. There were bombs brought into a joint session of Congress with the goal of preventing the certification of Joe Biden’s victory. And afterwards, more than 100 members of Congress sided with these insurrectionists to invalidate the Electoral College count.
There have to be consequences.
Already, more than 250,000 of our allies have signed the petition backing Rep. Cori Bush’s resolution to expel members of Congress who incited the coup attempt. Can you help us get to 300,000?
In solidarity,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
