Hello,
Like so many Americans, I am horrified and saddened by what occurred at the Capitol as lawmakers gathered to certify Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the next President and Vice President of the United States.
It was not a protest, it was an insurrection and an attack on all Americans -- and it will be remembered as one of the darkest, grimmest days in the history of our country.
But the mob that laid siege to the Capitol -- after being incited by the President of the United States -- did not intimidate or deter Congress from our constitutional duty. In the early hours of the morning, in a testament to the true resilience of our democracy, we came together and certified the results of the election.
Let me just say, it is so important that every single American takes time to reflect on what happened this week, and why.
Make no mistake: the individuals who carried out Wednesday's attack must be prosecuted and held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
But we must also grapple with the deliberate attempt by the President and his enablers to undermine faith in our democratic process that brought us to this point and has shaken our country to the very core.
There is a lot of work to do in our country, everyone.
Joe Biden will be sworn in on January 20. Once he is, we must immediately get to work on strengthening the response to this deadly pandemic and rebuilding our economy.
We also must work at an even more fundamental level to think about what it means to be a citizen in a democracy.
In the aftermath of Wednesday, I found myself thinking a lot about my dad. He was a World War II veteran who survived the Battle of the Bulge, and he talked to us about the different backgrounds that all the members of his unit came from. But at the end of the day, he said, regardless of their many differences, when it came to defending freedom and defeating Hitler, there was nothing they couldn't do because they loved America and the freedom we stand for.
We need to summon that same common purpose and find a way forward.
I'm committed to doing that, and I hope all Americans can come together to prevent another day like January 6th from ever happening again -- and to build a stronger, safer, and more just country together. After all, we are at our best when we realize that our country and its values are greater than any single one of us.
Please stay safe and healthy.
With every good wish,
Maggie Hassan
