American democracy has always been a fragile experiment.

It has no physical manifestation. It is not the original documents or words from our nation's founders. By themselves, those are meaningless. Instead, our democracy is only as strong as the people who work to fulfill the promise of those revolutionary ideas.

From time to time, our democracy is tested. Today is one of those defining moments for our country, and in this moment, I believe it is our duty to fight back on behalf of democracy.

In May of this year, I was amongst the first in Congress to express deep concern that President Trump was using the power of the presidency to pressure a foreign government to damage one of his political opponents. Now it has become clear that he did in fact personally ask Ukraine's President Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden in order to further his own re-election campaign.

Congress cannot let this transgression stand, or else we risk doing irreparable harm to America's standing in the world. Our silence in this moment could doom the republic.

That is why I called on the House of Representatives to launch an impeachment inquiry into the president's attempt to make demands of Ukraine to further his political campaign. I am glad that Speaker Pelosi announced the commencement of this inquiry. It would seem that Donald Trump has admitted to violating his oath of office, and if that proves true, then we must impeach the president.

I do not make this decision lightly, and it greatly saddens me that our country must start this process. But the gravity of this moment demands that we not be silent. American democracy is on the line.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
