It's 2021. And Friend, despite the violent attack on American democracy, we know that justice will continue to prevail. And there is much to celebrate and look forward to in this new year.
Thanks to YOU and this community of supporters, we exceeded our fundraising target for clean water action — and now it’s time to put these funds to work.
It’s your generosity, your belief that we CAN build a just, equitable, and sustainable future that powers our mission. Please know that I, and the entire Waterkeeper team, could not be more thankful for your dedication — and the forward-momentum with which you’ve propelled us into the new year. We remain steadfast in our commitment to holding decision-makers accountable for protecting our clean water resources and our communities that depend on them.
So rather than simply expressing my gratitude (which is considerable!) I’m honored to share a few of the exciting projects that you will make possible in 2021.
We’re launching dynamic new programs to protect and restore some of our world’s most iconic waterways, including the Nile, Mekong, and Amazon rivers.
We’re working with all 353 local Waterkeeper groups across 48 nations to craft and support solutions for waters big and small.
In partnership with Conservation International, we’re piloting a Freshwater Health Index assessment of Lake Victoria that will guide local decision-makers and protect drinking water for more than 40 million people in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and Rwanda.
All the while, we’ll be collaborating with the incoming Biden administration to strengthen the Clean Water Act and restore the 125 environmental protections that were weakened and rolled back in the last four years. I hope you will take a moment to read our asks for the first 100 days of the administration and sign on your support here.
None of this is easy. None of this will be done overnight. But with you at our side, Friend, I know this work is possible.
Please accept my deepest thanks and warmest wishes for a happy new year.
