Friends,

245 years ago, the great American experiment set out to prove that democracy could work. That a country governed by and for the people could not only sustain itself, but thrive. It was an exception to the rule of authoritarianism.

Democracy has worked in America because the people make it work. Because each of us believe in it, take part in it, and sustain it through our actions. When things haven't worked, Americans have voted, organized, and legislated their way to a better future.

For the past four years, Donald Trump has subverted and undermined our democracy in order to consolidate his own power. He's ignored facts. He's excoriated the press. He's lied to his supporters. Wednesday's violent insurrection on the U.S. Capitol was a direct result of these lies, and Donald Trump should be held responsible for his role in inciting the violence that claimed five lives and shook our democracy to its core.

But despite his best efforts, Trump's attack on our democracy will not succeed. When the dust settled -- literally -- on Capitol Hill, my colleagues and I returned to certify the results of November's election. I remain committed to ensuring a peaceful and seamless transition of power.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be the next President and Vice President of the United States. I look forward to having adults back in the White House, and I look forward to working with the next administration, my colleagues in Congress, and all of you to rebuild our nation.

Together, we will end the COVID-19 pandemic that continues to claim thousands of American lives each day, take on big issues like racial injustice and the climate crisis, and restore faith in our institutions and each other.

The great American experiment requires each and every one of us to play a part in what comes next. I urge all Americans to reject the President's fraudulent claims, commit to a peaceful transition of power, and look ahead to brighter days for our great nation.

Be safe and be well,

-- Martin
