Dear friends,
On Wednesday, as violent extremists breached the Capitol, I sat barricaded in my office, hoping that the demonstration would not turn violent and lethal. I want to be clear; I support the ability of Americans to peacefully protest, but this was not a peaceful protest. It was an attack that was fueled by dangerous and false rhetoric of some irresponsible Republican officials and conspiracy theorists. Of course, most alarmingly, these thugs were encouraged to storm the Capitol and threaten congressional lawmakers by President Trump.
The bedrock of our democratic republic is that we elect our leaders through free and fair elections, and have a peaceful transfer of power. We feared that President Trump might not peacefully transfer power to President-Elect Joe Biden, and the actions of yesterday proved those fears correct. It was an attack on the very foundation of our country.
But hours after their failed attempt, Congress reconvened and certified the votes of the electoral college -- confirming what we already knew to be true: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be the next President and Vice-President of the United States.
Public officials, including Donald Trump, must be held responsible not only for inciting violence with their inflammatory rhetoric, but for shirking their responsibility to protect and safeguard American lives and our democracy.
And while we cannot forget what happened on the steps of the Hill, we must move ahead as the representatives we were elected to be. So for Nevadans, and Americans everywhere, I’m going to get back to the work they sent me here to do.
In solidarity,
Congresswoman Susie Lee
