John,

On January 6th, our country witnessed an act of domestic terrorism as an insurrection took place at the U.S. Capitol. This afternoon, I spoke with Andrea Mitchell to share my experience on that day and how we move forward.

The President bears direct responsibility for the events of January 6th. For months, he’s used his position to foment division, to promote conspiracy theories, and to encourage his supporters to participate in these actions.

The trials we face today are unprecedented in American history. The President is a continued direct threat to our democracy and to the safety of the American people.

That is why I have called on the Vice President as well as the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment.

This is not a decision that I have arrived at lightly. When I was elected to Congress, this is nothing I ever anticipated. But I have sworn an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, and today the actions we must take are clear.

While these past several months have been a dark hour in American history, together we will persevere and strengthen our country.
