Trump personally directed a mob of his fellow insurrectionists to attack the Capitol - and the legislative branch of the US government - in order to overturn the results of the 2020 American presidential election, which he lost. He was emboldened and his supporters were incited by Senators Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz and other co-conspirators in Congress.
