We’re going to let you in on a little secret: For all that they might crow about picking up seats in the House this year, Republicans are absolutely petrified about the 2022 election.
Some party mainstays have seen the writing on the wall: Two critical members from swing states, Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania and Richard Burr in North Carolina, have already announced they’re standing down, meaning the races to replace them will be wide open. Wisconsin’s Ron Johnson could be next.
The GOP’s chances are looking so bad, POLITICO reports, that leaders are practically begging Iowa’s Chuck Grassley to run for an eighth term next year -- never mind that he’ll be pushing 90 by the time the race rolls around.
Meanwhile, Democrats are standing strong -- not a single member has announced plans to retire. And with two recent additions to the team from Georgia, the Democratic Party could be in a position to make our blue majority even stronger and more secure.
But here’s the thing: You know how irate Mitch McConnell and the Republicans will be watching every single member of the Biden-Harris Cabinet, every single progressive judicial nominee, and every transformative piece of legislation that makes its way through the House and through the Senate over their objections. You know they will do everything in their power to roadblock, divert, and deny progress just like they did during Obama’s administration. And with how desperate they are, they’ll be more obstinate than ever. So we have to be even better prepared than we’ve ever been, too. But after all the work we did to secure this precious majority, our resources are 100% tapped out.
