Dear John,

Today ADL calls for the removal of President Donald Trump from office, either by the means afforded by the U.S. Constitution or through his own resignation.

As this week comes to a close, we must not allow the historic and horrific events of the past 48 hours to simply fade without significant consequences. In our over 100 years of history, ADL has never called for the President of the United States to be removed from office, but what occurred on Wednesday was inexcusable. It will forever be remembered as one of the darkest days of American democracy and it makes unambiguously clear: President Trump is unfit for office and needs to be removed.

Violence and sedition. Confederate flags being proudly displayed by rioters in the United States Capitol. White supremacists and far-right extremists marauding through the hallowed halls of one of our nation’s most sacred institutions. This was incited by President Trump and organized on social media for all the world to see. (Please read a more extended version of this unprecedented ADL statement

here. )

This step comes after the shocking chaos that unfolded when pro-Trump extremists, including some identified right-wing extremists, stormed the U.S. Capitol building. In the wake of the siege, five people have been confirmed dead including a police officer who had been helping to stave off the rioters, one of the insurrectionists who had invaded the Capitol building and three others who have not yet been publicly identified.

Among the extremists, there have been calls for further violence and even an all-out war.

The violence and the disregard for the democratic process are a plague on our entire country — and it is something that ADL has sadly been warning about for much of the last year. This is why we began briefing law enforcement and elected officials in more than a dozen states back in October about the potential threat and dangerous actions extremists could take in the aftermath of the election.

There’s a dangerous mix of antisemitism and racism in these riots as well. We’ve seen “Camp Auschwitz” shirts, swastika flags, nooses and Heil Hitler salutes. All of this augurs badly for civil society and has echoes of what we witnessed in Charlottesville more than three years ago.

DISRUPTING THE EXTREMISTS

ADL analysts are looking into the affiliations and identities of the rioters who rallied on Wednesday in DC and in many cities across the country, and how they are spreading their plans and misinformation. We are tracking extremist reactions and assessing potential future threats. When that information may help law enforcement to disrupt potential dangers, we will share that information with them, as we did in over 1,000 cases in 2020. REDUCING HATE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

This coordinated assault on our democracy was fueled on social media. President Trump has used his social media accounts to promote sedition and incite violence.

Sign our #BanTrumpSaveDemocracy petition calling on Twitter to ban the President from its platform immediately and for Facebook & Instagram to make their bans permanent. We demand that social platforms fulfill their obligations to deter extremism. Through the Stop Hate for Profit coalition, we call on these social media companies to put the safety of their users and of our democracy over their profit margins.

HELP ADL FIGHT HATE NOW

If the actions of our President and the violent trespass into our nation’s Capitol building Wednesday horrified you, make no mistake... it was alarming but it wasn’t surprising. Years of hate-filled rhetoric have led our country directly to this point where dangerous extremists felt empowered to violently riot in the middle of the day, covered by the media for all the world to witness.

It’s up to you to help ADL make sure it never happens again!
