 John — Nearly half a dozen Americans died during the Trump-orchestrated insurrection at the Capitol on Wednesday. Nearly five dozen were injured, confidential materials and federal property were stolen, and nearly half a dozen explosive devices in at least three locations were discovered. Some of our allies across the globe claim to have evidence that Trump instructed federal law enforcement officials to allow for this insurrection to breach the Capitol and occupy Congress. In any other country this would be recognized as a coup attempt — without question. Lives were lost and as tragic and shameful as this coup attempt was, we are fortunate that armed insurrectionists did not reach the areas where members of Congress were taking cover nor have the chance to detonate their explosives. We must set a precedent for the sake of our democracy’s future: There are consequences for instigating a literal assault on our democracy and every Republican must be forced to, on the record, formally decide whether they choose our democracy or their disgraced leader.
