CAPITOL HILL THIS WEEK

Earlier this week, the world watched with horror as an unruly mob bedecked in white supremacist and anti-Semitic symbols, separatist iconography and Trump merchandise stormed Capitol Hill in a desperate attempt to stall our democratic process. Details from the day are still being revealed and the aftermath continues to unfold.

We are relieved to report that our out members of Congress and allies sheltered safely in their offices or evacuated during the event.

LGBTQ LEADERS RESPOND

Mondaire Jones and Ritchie Torres made LGBTQ history last weekend as the first two out LGBTQ Black men sworn into the U.S. Congress and both were present on Capitol Hill during the riots. Representative Torres spoke to the New York Daily News about his experience during the storming of Capitol Hill. Representative Jones joined the The Mehdi Hasan Show to discuss the fellow lawmakers who urged the rioters on. You can watch his remarks here.

U.S. Representative David Cicilline is circulating Articles of Impeachment. Over 110 House Members have signed on thus far.

Both U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin and U.S. Representative Sharice Davids called for the President's Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove the President from office before inauguration.

Danica Roem, currently running for reelection in Virginia's House of Delegates, responded to outgoing U.S. Senator Kelly Loeffler’s concession speech where she claimed the fight against the “radical agenda of the left” was far from over. Learn more about Danica’s campaign here. 

Marti Cummings, running for New York City Council District 7, joined U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth in calling for Illinois Representative Mary Miller’s resignation and expulsion. Learn why here. Marti will also be joining a community townhall to discuss education reform on the 13th.

Elisa Crespo’s special election date for New York City Council District 15 has been set for March 23rd. Elisa also celebrated Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’s resignation. Elisa will be the first out trans person elected in New York history if she wins.

RECALL ALERT

Anchorage (AK) Assembly Chair Felix Rivera may be facing a frivolous recall attempt soon, and the groups leading the recall announced they have enough signatures for a ballot push. We’ll be watching this closely.
