Journalism and COVID-19: The Toll of a Pandemic ([link removed][UNIQID]) aims to humanize and detail the toll of the coronavirus on journalism in the United States and pays tribute to journalists and media professionals whose lives were cut short due to COVID. Learn more here ›› ([link removed][UNIQID])

The project was created by Sandy Mui, PEN America’s digital communications assistant, who also made an appearance on The PEN Pod ([link removed][UNIQID]) to talk about the project’s humanized look at the pandemic’s impact on journalism and the process behind executing the project.

The PEN Ten with Robert Jones Jr.: ([link removed][UNIQID]) “A society that only wishes to produce soldiers and laborers is ill-prepared to cultivate artists. It’s a miracle that artists have been able to self-actualize under such conditions."

[link removed][UNIQID]

The PEN Ten with Nathaniel Popkin: ([link removed][UNIQID]) “Untruth and conspiracy theories are the biggest threats to free expression in the United States today because they shatter the possibility of a shared understanding of reality."

[link removed][UNIQID]

The PEN Ten with Deesha Philyaw: ([link removed][UNIQID]) "Writers disrupt white supremacist narratives with truer, more just narratives. Tenderness, joy, humor, and imagination are among our weapons of resistance.”

[link removed][UNIQID]

The PEN Ten with Emily Hashimoto: ([link removed][UNIQID]) "I’m really proud to be a part of the wave of queer writers and/or writers of color publishing their books today, because for many years, the truth we had came predominantly from cis, straight white men."
