Earlier this week, American democracy was attacked by domestic terrorists who stormed the United States Capitol while Congress engaged in their constitutional duty to count the votes of the Electoral College. These insurrectionist attacks were a result of a months long disinformation campaign perpetrated by the President of the United States to undermine the outcome of the election.
The country watched for months as Trump, and many Republican members of Congress, disavowed the election results and doubled down on false claims that the election was rigged, fraudulent ballots were cast, and voting machines were hacked. And on January 6th, Trump’s disinformation campaign reached a tipping point as supporters stormed the Capitol with the intent to derail democracy.
Trump must be held accountable for his intentional stoking of fears and incitement to violence. The attempted coup America watched unfold in Washington, DC is a direct assault on our government and Congress must not allow this treacherous president to hold office for one more day.
Either through pushing 25th Amendment remedies or through the process of impeachment, Congress must act or our nation runs the risk of Trump doing more damage with his remaining days in office.
