It's a sad day for our country -- after weeks of perpetuating false claims of election fraud without evidence and encouraging his supporters to descend on Washington, President Trump incited a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol this week.

"We're going to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue... and we're going to the Capitol... We're going to try to give our Republicans... the pride and boldness that they need to take back our country."

Hundreds of Trump's supporters stormed the Capitol building in an attempt to overturn the results of the election. In no uncertain terms, Trump encouraged an attempted coup and fanned the flames with more baseless allegations of election fraud.

Trump is a threat to our national security and a menace to our democracy.

For that reason -- and I do not say this lightly -- I believe the Vice President and cabinet secretaries should invoke the 25th Amendment and remove President Trump from office immediately. If not, it's time to impeach.

Despite the dangerous attacks on our democracy we witnessed this week, democracy will win. Democracy overcame Wednesday night when I joined my colleagues in Congress in voting to certify the election results and affirm Joe Biden as the next president.
