Pete here. I want to extend a hearty congratulations to Senators-elect Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff.
This was a hard-fought and historic triumph, and the resolve of Democratic supporters combined with the work of organizers like Stacey Abrams has culminated in a chance at a better future for America. But just because we won in Georgia doesn’t mean getting to that future will be easy.
Wednesday demonstrates just how far the far-right will go to subvert progressive victories and our democracy -- we couldn't even celebrate these amazing victories before we had to defend our very institutions of government. And this is only just the start, unfortunately.
Because of the Senate’s “filibuster” rule, a party actually needs 60 seats to pass non-budgetary legislation. We now, even with our fresh wins, will only have a simple majority (50 Democratic senators + Vice President Harris as a tiebreaker).
Democrats won in GEORGIA, friend. Georgia, of all places! It’s clear more Americans than ever before are standing up against the GOP and their vision for this country. We’re expanding the map, expanding our party, and expanding our reach.
But it isn’t enough right now. We still don’t have those 60 votes in the Senate. The GOP can STILL stop us from passing legislation, even though we won so resoundingly.
We need to do several things right now: rush every resource we can to every progressive leader who could use it, show Republicans that their constituents won’t settle for more obstructionism in 2021, and get ahead of the 2022 cycle immediately so that -- the next time we have a big win like this -- we won’t have to think about Republicans at all.
Instead, we can get right to the good work of building the kind of country you and I both want.
I’m asking you to help me with that work right now. Let’s take this huge win, realize it opens us up to an even bigger challenge, and do the WORK it will take to capitalize on the achievements of Stacey Abrams, Raphael Warnock, Jon Ossoff, and so many others.
