Alberta paramedics not included in first wave of COVID-19 vaccine distribution

Although their profession is considered an essential service, paramedics in Alberta were not included in the first wave of front-line workers to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. In an emailed statement, Alberta Health officials say Emergency Medical Services are likely to be included in Phase 2 of vaccine delivery that is expected to rollout in April 2021.

Medical service bus to provide care for Saskatchewan Indigenous communities

Nonprofit fundraising group Synergy 8 announced a $3.3-million project that aims to serve Indigenous communities lacking access to medical care. The group launched and funded a mobile health unit in Saskatoon. It has been used to provide judgement free treatment to 7,000 patients in core neighborhoods annually.

The bell tolled for paramedics who fell in the line of duty. The Paramedic Memorial Bell, which is being carried to every paramedic service in Ontario, was in Leeds and Grenville for three days, taken across the area in honour of emergency medical services workers’ lost comrades.

Remembering paramedics who didn't make it home

In a somber ceremony Dec. 23 at the Cornwall Civic Complex, the Cornwall and SD&G Paramedic Service remembered their colleagues across Canada who lost their lives on the job this year. Names of 51 paramedics from across the country were read out by Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement, Warden Frank Prevost, MP Eric Duncan, and Cornwall City Councillors Glen Grant, Elaine MacDonald, and Syd Gardner.

"We're working with the staff up here, and I can't say enough about the staff that's accepted us up here. And I can't say enough about the communities and the people of these communities that have accepted us. They understand we're here to help," said Ryan Woiden, one of six advanced paramedics who left the city on Dec. 27 and will return on Dec. 30.

Durham Paramedics demand 'action' for 'disgusting' assaults

Some of the good guys and gals in Durham Region who rush to care for people when they are hurt or in need say they are increasingly being attacked on the job. Paramedics are assaulted on the job on a regular basis and one emergency medical service union took to social media to call for “action.”

Kenora Chiefs Advisory acquires decommissioned ambulances for mobile COVID testing

An organization that provides health and social services to First Nations in the Kenora area has found a novel way to bring COVID-19 testing to its communities. Partners of the Kenora Chiefs Advisory reached out to paramedic services across the province to see if they had any decommissioned ambulances available — and three of them responded to the call, said Daphne Armstrong, the director of strategy and innovation for the organization.
