Welcome to the Number of the DayJanuary 8, 2021President-elect Biden must nominate candidates for 15 executive agency positions that, along with the Vice President, comprise the president's Cabinet. This includes positions such as the secretary of state, secretary of defense, and attorney general. These appointments all require Senate confirmation.[1] However, selecting new Cabinet members is merely the tip of the iceberg. In 2016, there were a total of 1,714 government positions subject to presidential appointment: 1,242 positions required Senate confirmation, and 472 did not.[2] The new administration is also responsible for filling thousands of other positions across the federal government, including in operations and policy. Every weekday, Ballotpedia's Daily Transition Tracker highlights potential Cabinet nominees, appointments, and news related to the Biden presidential transition.
