Leahy for Vermont

Friend --

While yester‌day was a failure of security, it demonstrated our democracy's ultimate resilience.

On the same day that our Capitol was laid under siege, Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff flipped two Senate seats, giving Democrats control of the chamber (in no small part because of your commitment and financial contributions). On the same day that President Trump encouraged violence and destruction from his supporters, Congress returned back within hours to complete the work to certify the election results and confirm that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be the next President and Vice President of the United States.

Our best and our worst were on full display. And here is what is painfully clear: President Trump presents an immediate and existential threat as long as he remains in office.

While we have 13 days before President-elect Biden is inaugurated, that is 13 days too many. President Trump needs to be removed from office.

We have three options:

  1. President Trump can resign.
  2. Vice President Pence and the Cabinet can invoke the 25th Amendment.
  3. The House can begin impeachment proceedings.

No matter the solution, each of these can begin immediately. I am writing to you today to share that I support them each, with the ultimate goal of removing President Trump from office before he can cause any more lasting, painful damage to our democracy and the American people.

Calls to remove President Trump are growing louder and louder -- from inside Congress and from outside -- and I hope you will join me in showing your support.

Throughout it all, I feel hopeful. We are days away from closing the chapter on this dark moment in our history. It can only get brighter from here. My hope is that we can usher in the light together.

Thank you for lending your hope. Please stay safe.

Sincerely,

Patrick Leahy
U.S. Senator
