John,
Yesterday -- as my colleagues and I met to certify the results of the presidential election -- a pro-Trump mob stormed our nation's Capitol. The events that transpired during this attempted coup were alarming and have left me even more worried about the state of our country.
Make no mistake: this was a dangerous, violent assault on our democracy instigated by our Commander in Chief. Even once he witnessed the consequences of his urging, and saw mobs breaking into and taking over the Capitol, President Trump did far too little, too late to stop the rioting. He even told the mob, "We love you, you're very special." And he reiterated the very claims of a fraudulent election that spurred these terrorists to act in the first place.
John -- this insurrection did not happen in a vacuum. It was incited by a president and his allies who have spent months peddling baseless claims that the election was rigged. Yesterday, after months of their stoking this fire, we saw the very dangerous consequences.
The Vice President and Cabinet must invoke the 25th Amendment because it is the swiftest way to remove President Trump from office. This is about protecting our democracy. Every day Donald Trump is in office is another opportunity to incite further violence and destabilize this country. He is dangerous. He has already made us more vulnerable to our adversaries across the world.
After orders to shelter in place were lifted, I rejoined my colleagues to certify the election results and declare Joe Biden and Kamala Harris the rightful winners of the 2020 presidential election. Despite yesterday's events, I remain hopeful for better days ahead under their compassionate, honest, and experienced leadership. I look forward to working together with them.
I want to take a moment to extend my gratitude to everyone who asked about my safety. I will continue to do all I can to defend our democracy.
Thank you,
Kim
