Dear John,

I never thought I would see this in our nation -- the President of the United States emboldening rioters and allies in Congress to seek to overturn a free and fair election.

However, there were some scary and chaotic moments when the Capitol was breached by rioters and the Capitol police evacuated us from the Senate floor.

These next two weeks are dangerous for our democracy. Make no mistake, Trump incited this riot. This is a fire that he first lit in Charlottesville, and that has only been building in intensity in the last few years, and will only be solved by the removal of President Trump.

Despite the threats of those attempting to undermine our democracy, my colleagues and I returned to the Senate last night and completed our constitutional obligation to certify President-elect Joe Biden's victory. Now more than ever though, we need to come together and secure our democracy.

When President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris are sworn in on January 20th, I'm confident that they will bring us together, restore American leadership in the White House, and end the toxic divisiveness of the past four years.
