Yesterday, as the Connecticut General
Assembly took the oath of office to begin the 2021 legislative
session, the U.S. Congress began the process of officially
certifying President-elect Joe Biden's victory.

It should have been a day of celebration for democracy. But
because of President Trump, yesterday became one of the darkest
days in American history.

Members of Connecticut's Congressional delegation have joined
the growing number of Democrats calling for Donald Trump to be
removed from office immediately. As Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro
said yesterday, "the survival of our democracy depends on it."

The Connecticut Democratic Party stands in support of this call
to action. Whether it happens through invoking the 25th Amendment
or through impeachment, President Trump must be removed from
office.

We all know what happened. A violent, armed mob of Trump's
supporters, incited by his baseless claims of voter fraud and his
calls for political violence, swarmed the U.S. Capitol in an
attempted coup.

Members of Congress -- in fear for their lives -- were forced to
wear gas masks and evacuate as the Capitol was ransacked.
Multiple people died, our nation's capital was locked down, and
the entire world watched in horror.

Now we must decide what happens next.
