John,

Yesterday, domestic terrorists temporarily overtook the U.S. Capitol in a violent insurrection. They broke windows and doors, looted Congressional property, then flaunted it on social media, and brandished firearms and other homemade weapons. This was the precursor to a coup. It was fundamentally un-American and the direct result of incitement from Donald Trump and his allies.

Trump spent four years stoking the fires of white supremacy and attempting to erode our democratic institutions at every turn. He's encouraged attacks on the media, told white nationalists to "stand back and stand by," and led the movement to overturn our democratic election. Alarm bells sounded every day since his administration took office to warn of the violence we experienced yesterday.

In June, racial justice demonstrators in Washington, D.C. were met by hundreds of officers in riot gear. Their First Amendment rights were violated so Trump could stage a photo-op. By contrast, a violent mob of white nationalists, many of whom were armed, easily overtook our country's seat of government yesterday. Trump didn't discourage them; instead, he released a video message where he said: "We love you, you're very special."

Trump can no longer occupy his seat in the White House and must be removed from office immediately.

John, the attack on our Capitol succeeded in delaying a vote. That much is true. But it did not undo our democracy or the will of the American people. After the riots ended, Congress finished what we started and certified the 2020 election results. President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be sworn in in just under two weeks.

I am grateful for my safety and the safety of all Members of Congress, staff, reporters, and the essential workers who keep the Capitol functioning. And I am so thankful to everyone who sent good thoughts and hopeful messages. Now, the real work begins holding Trump and his allies accountable and getting our country back on track. For that, I am so humbled that you're on this team.

Thank you,

Diana
