The great hero Rep. John Lewis once said, “Democracy is not a state, it is an act.”
We received a stark reminder of this yesterday when a mob stormed the US Capitol in an attempt to stall or stop the certification of Joe Biden as President of the United States.
They did this yesterday because they were told that the election was stolen by fraud. They were told a lie.
Pennsylvania is the cradle of American Democracy. It was in Philadelphia that delegates gathered and signed our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution — kicking off our grand democratic experiment.
And it was here, last fall, that we held fair, lawful elections and our people chose Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to lead our nation.
Lots of these so-called Republican lawyers have for weeks made big claims of fraud on cable TV, but every time they show up to court they forget to bring their evidence with them. In many cases, these lawsuits don’t even allege fraud — because lying to a court can have professional consequences. Lying to your supporters has big consequences, too. Yesterday’s disturbing breach of the Capitol, and the damage and vandalism that followed, was one of them.
John — even after the Capitol was cleared, the lies didn’t stop. But early this morning around 3am, I was proud to challenge them and defend the will of Pennsylvania’s voters and the fair election they participated in. We prevailed, and the effort to throw out our electoral votes was defeated. Now that they’ve been counted, Joe Biden will be our next President, and we can begin to heal.
I promise to keep working in Congress for you. We’ve got a lot of work to do.
Yours,
Matt
