After Donald Trump incited an armed insurrection at the U.S. Capitol yesterday — and with CNN just now reporting that Trump is “bent on destruction in his final days” — it is beyond clear that Trump must be removed from office before he does something even worse.
Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet should immediately invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office.
Instead, some Cabinet members are reportedly considering resigning. Indeed, Secretary of Transportation (and Mitch McConnell’s wife) Elaine Chao has announced her intention to resign in a matter of days.
While members of Trump’s Cabinet may be genuinely disturbed by yesterday’s events, the time to take a principled stand by resigning came and went long ago.
The principled — and necessary — thing for Cabinet officials to do now is to remain in office and strip Donald Trump of power via the 25th Amendment.
Tell Elaine Chao and every other member of Trump’s Cabinet:
Remain in your posts and use your authority under the 25th Amendment to remove Donald Trump from office as soon as possible. YOU got in bed with this mess, now YOU need to clean it up, not slink away at the very moment of undeniable national peril.
Add your name.
Thank you for taking action.

P.S. For half a century, Public Citizen has been advancing policies that put the needs of everyday Americans before the greed of billionaires and Big Business. That legacy of progress and that ongoing work could not matter more right now, as our nation transitions to a Joe Biden presidency that will be as progressive as we — you and Public Citizen, together — make it.
Of course, we’re also busy undoing damage the Trump administration has already done and watching out for whatever shenanigans a lame-duck Donald Trump tries to get away with. And — like so many nonprofits and small businesses — we continue to experience financial strain related to the coronavirus pandemic.
If you can, please make an emergency donation today to support the critical work we’re doing together or even join our popular Monthly Giving program. Thank you.
