Like you, I am heartsick over yesterday’s violent attack on our nation’s capital.
I shared my reflections in a piece for the New York Times . If you have a few moments, I hope you will read it. [[link removed]]
I understand that the grief, fear and anger that we all feel right now can be incredibly isolating—particularly against the backdrop of a pandemic that has kept us apart for nearly a year. But please remember: Democracy has prevailed.
Congress reconvened last night to certify the results of the election; Joe Biden will be president on January 20. And I truly believe that President-elect Biden is prepared to meet this moment and lead our country toward justice and healing.
It is also not lost on me that this violent mob, many wielding confederate flags and sporting hateful, anti-Semitic slogans, stormed the Capitol on the same day that the first Black man and a Jewish son of immigrants were declared Georgia’s next Senators. Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, the people of Georgia, and the people who made these victories possible, fill me with hope.
Please take care of yourselves, and do not be afraid to ask for help if you need it.
With love and strength,
Kirsten
