Hi John,
Yesterday will go down as a dark day in American history. As Democrats securedcontrol of the Senate, we witnessed an attack on our country and our people,as terrorists breached the U.S. Capitol.
This was nothing short of a failed coup attempt that threatened our democracyand electoral process. Donald Trump and his allies incited this with theirrefusal to accept the results of a free and fair election—showing how far theyare willing to go in order to hold onto power. These illegal and seditiousacts will not—could not—prevent the functioning of our democracy. Nonetheless,they represent a grave attack on the soul of our country, and prove once againthat Donald Trump is not fit for office. He cannot perform his duties asPresident.
We believe that Donald Trump is a threat and that it’s a moral imperative forhim to be lawfully removed from office. We join the chorus of leaders andorganizations stating unequivocally that Donald Trump’s presidency needs toend now, before he causes more harm.
These terrorists, incited by Trump, are white supremacists, and only a handfulof them were arrested for violently and unlawfully forcing their way into theCapitol. Their actions endangered the lives of many and resulted in fourdeaths. The police did not stop them, in a painful contrast to the way thepolice treated peaceful Black Lives Matter protesters, who were tear-gassed,shot with rubber bullets, and arrested by the hundreds this summer in D.C.This was a clear example of white supremacy and white privilege in action.It’s a stark reminder of who is afforded the right to protest in this countryand who is not.
This is a somber moment, but there is also hope for a new beginning.Yesterday, Senators-elect Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock won their races,and Joe Biden’s victory was certified, giving Democrats control of the WhiteHouse, the House, and the Senate. We are at a turning point. Democrats willhave control of the federal government for the first time since 2010, and theopportunity to enact a bolder, more progressive vision for the people of thiscountry.
It’s been an overwhelming 36 hours. Take a breath, stay safe, and rememberthat despite the GOP’s best efforts, we organized and we won.
