Dear Friend,
Yesterday, as members of Congress met to certify the results of the election,
insurrectionists violently took to the United States Capitol and tried to
disrupt our democratic process.
We must be clear: Donald Trump bears responsibility for this insurrection at the
Capitol and the attempted coup of our government in which four people died.
In the months since the free and fair presidential election, Trump has advanced
knowingly false claims to undermine and overturn the election results, a
shameful violation of his sworn duty to uphold the Constitution of the United
States and an interference with the peaceful transfer of power.
By stoking these fears of election integrity and the flames of white supremacy,
he has again — and most egregiously — shown us he is unfit to be president. That is why the Human Rights Campaign is joining the calls for the formal and
immediate removal of Trump from office, whether that be through the invocation
of the 25th Amendment or through impeachment and conviction.

If we do not hold him accountable now, we risk further damage to our democracy
and, I fear, we set a dangerous precedent for the future — one where leaders
weaponize division and fear to get their way when they do not like the facts at
hand. Neither of which is acceptable.
We also need to condemn the violence and white privilege on full display from
the rioters. It is hard to see yesterday’s images of them, arrogant and unafraid
as they violate one of our most sacred institutions, and not compare those
sights to the senseless police brutality that met nonviolent Black Lives Matter
protesters nationwide last year.
Let our calls for Donald Trump’s removal from office be part of that
condemnation … and a commitment to root out the hatred he has so dangerously and
despicably fueled further. So, friend, I am asking you
