Hi Friend --

Yesterday, we shared this message. It’s important that we share it again today with you, as we grapple with a violent assault on our Capitol and democracy.

“This morning, we woke up to the promise of new beginnings. Georgia had elected two new Senators who both served the late Rep. John Lewis: Reverend Raphael Warnock, who will become the state’s first Black Senator, and Jon Ossoff, who will become the state’s first Jewish Senator. These electoral wins were due to the long-term organizing efforts of Black, Latinx, and AAPI communities in Georgia. It was a morning that promised a new day for our country.

A day that started with so much joy was tarnished by domestic terrorists, and the President who incited them. What we witnessed today in the U.S. Capitol was the poison at the root of our country: white supremacy. White supremacy was on the Senate floor, where elected officials argued to suppress the vote and the will of the people. White supremacy burst down the doors of the U.S. Capitol. And white supremacy was on display this morning, when the President incited an insurrection on our democracy from the Ellipse.

Let us be clear: we are not going backwards. Our country is facing a reckoning for justice centuries overdue, and we will not be deterred by those who stoke hate and fear. We are building a new America, one that centers equity, liberation, and justice for all.

Our hearts are with all members of the NLC Family who serve our country at the Capitol, and for all of those who have been affected by today’s act of domestic terrorism.

Tonight, we mourn with you. Tomorrow, we continue the work building the country we aspire to be.”

At New Leaders Council, we know this: whenever our country is looking to answer its hardest problems, you will find a NLC alum leading us forward.

I am proud to be a member of this community, and I am proud of every NLC alum who is rewriting our history. Thank you for being part of this community.

Onward,
