Arena Community,
The terrorists and insurrectionists we all witnessed yesterday were emboldened by Donald Trump and the GOP, who’ve incited violence and spread lies for years -- their rhetoric and actions built off of centuries of systemic racism and white supremacy.
Yesterday also marked a huge victory for the progressive movement. With historic wins in Georgia and the Electoral College certification, we secured trifecta control over the Presidency, Senate, and House. All while achieving so many firsts and unlikelies -- including electing the first Black senator from Georgia.
We must make sense of these two realities at once. In the last four years, progressives have built tremendous power and had meaningful wins. We’ve also seen the other side go to new, unlawful, and disturbing lengths for political gain.
As disorienting as the past few days have been, the work ahead of us is clear. While it is not the whole solution, we must continue to strengthen our democracy by electing leaders with integrity. Leaders who will protect our democratic institutions with bold, visionary action. Leaders who will hold bad actors accountable and stand up to hateful rhetoric and acts. That means we need trained campaign staff who can help elect those leaders and win those elections. And that staff must reflect the communities we need to organize.
