Yesterday was one of the darkest days I’ve ever witnessed in Congress. Insurrectionists stormed the Capitol armed with weapons, fury, and a callous disregard for our sacred institutions. They came because they wanted to take away our democracy. They chose conspiracy over the American people, and fascism over civil liberties.

But remember this: they failed. Together, we picked up the pieces of our democracy and we restored order. Early this morning we finished our constitutional duty. Joe Biden’s win was certified in the very chambers they occupied just hours earlier.

These extremists can’t bulldoze our 230-year-old institutions with their violent antics and petty lies. Our nation is too strong for that. Together, the House and Senate proved that America will endure — and just under two weeks from now, Joe Biden will be sworn in.

But our work isn’t finished. The problems that led to the crisis of yesterday still exist today. Now more than ever, Congress must work to reject the violent rhetoric, false narratives, and extremism that led to these tragic actions. We owe that to the American people.
