Dear John,
What we saw yesterday in our nation’s capital was an unprecedented attack on the basic foundations of our democracy.
Xenophobia has always been central to the anti-democratic and anti-American ideology of Trumpism. Yesterday’s violence was yet another reminder that we cannot afford to be complacent—now is the time to continue the fight against white supremacy and to enshrine the rights and humanity of immigrant communities.
While yesterday we feared for the integrity of our democracy and the safety of our public servants, the election on Tuesday in Georgia ushered in a new era for the U.S. Senate. New York’s own, Senator Chuck Schumer, will now be the incoming Senate Majority Leader, and our hope for bold, expansive, progressive reform is renewed.
We must take bold action to make this country a true democracy where we stand with and for each other. By passing a Roadmap to Freedom, America can do more than just rescind the Muslim Ban and reinstate the DACA and TPS programs. We can provide a broad path to citizenship, guarantee the full inclusion of all immigrants in economic recovery programs, and implement a moratorium on immigrant deportation and enforcement. It’s the right thing to do for the millions of essential workers who remain on the frontlines of this pandemic keeping the engines of our economy moving and safe-keeping our health.
Together, we will rebuild a stronger, inclusive democracy where liberty and justice are guaranteed to all.
In solidarity,
Murad Awawdeh and Rovika Rajkishun
