On January 6, we witnessed an attempted coup against our democracy.
The party of “Law and Order,” led by its despotic President, incited a violent insurrection in its last-ditch attempt to overturn our election results.
Confederate flags and Nazi garb were paraded through the United States Capitol as the building was breached for the first time since 1814. A right-wing mob stormed the steps, scaled the walls, and infiltrated Congress while we were upholding our constitutional duty to certify the election results.
I am safe, and I thank the brave law enforcement officers who helped secure the Capitol. But this rebellion must have consequences.
Donald Trump and every member of Congress who enabled his refusal to concede and incitement of violence have blood on their hands, and they must pay for what they’ve done.
It is time to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove Donald Trump from office. Trump continues to be unfit to serve, and each passing day he remains in office, the chances of another violent attack grows.
Together, we will recover. And with you by my side, I will continue to fight like hell for our democracy and for our country.
Onward,
Rep. Eric Swalwell
