Hi John,
Yesterday should have been a celebration of a new Senate, the result of tireless work done by organizers to build progressive power in Georgia, which puts so many of our progressive policy priorities within reach for President Biden’s first term. It should have been a celebration of Senator-elect Warnock making history as the first African-American Democrat to be elected to the Senate to represent Georgia. It should have also been a day of affirming our democracy by confirming the Electoral College vote for President Biden and Vice President Harris.
Instead, we spent the day watching, horrified, as an angry mob trashed the Capitol and threatened our government as it carried out the peaceful transition of power. Yesterday’s events are the direct result of a president who refuses to accept that millions of us turned out to elect Joe Biden by overwhelming margins.
Today, we will take time to recognize the historic election in Georgia and to thank the organizers and organizations that made it possible, including our partners at the New Georgia Project, Black Voters Matter, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Mijente, Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights, and Black Male Voter Project. Your work to deliver a new Senate in 2021 will be crucial to rebuilding our country and combating the treasonous forces we saw on full display yesterday, and we are proud to join with you in solidarity as we begin this next chapter.
Thank you for all that you do to build progressive power and a more just future.
In Solidarity,
Marvin Steele
