Like many of you, I’m still processing what happened in our nation’s capital yesterday.
I won't sugarcoat it. The President of the United States incited a coup attempt on the seat of democracy because he lost the election.
When I sat down with my kids to explain what they were seeing on the news, I focused on the simple truth that has guided my work as Attorney General: We ALL have a responsibility to preserve our democracy.
The President, his extremist allies in Congress and the right-wing media have repeatedly lied to the American people. They falsely claim the election was rigged in order to subvert the will of American voters. I was especially disappointed that numerous Republican Attorneys General — whose duty it is to uphold the law — filed a baseless lawsuit attempting to overturn the election results.
President Trump will soon be gone, but much work must be done to repair our democracy. It is obviously more fragile than any of us wanted to believe.
I want you to know that as long as I’m the People’s Lawyer, I will continue to defend democracy and hold accountable all those who threaten it.
