Dear Friend,
Peace Over Violence is an agency that supports people’s healing journeys back to resilience after trauma. Yesterday’s traumatic events in our nation’s Capitol were another reminder of the monumental work ahead of us. This abhorrent violence has once again exposed a fundamental truth in our country: the greatest domestic threat of our time is White Supremacy. To paraphrase a famous quote from Maya Angelou, when segments of the country show you who they are, believe them. Will this unleashing of hatred and tyranny finally elicit a clarion call to face this truth? Will today be the day the denial finally ends? We cannot change without truth.
Today, we’d like to share the last stanza of Maya Angelou’s poem “On The Pulse of Morning,” which she read in the U.S. Capitol in 1993. Let’s embody the spirit of her words and realize our collective strength so we may lead with love and justice on our side.
“Here on the pulse of this new day,
You may have the grace to look up and out
And into your sister's eyes, into
Your brother's face, your country
And say simply
Very simply
With hope
Good morning.”
