John --
Like many of you, I woke up this morning angered by what transpired yesterday in the U.S. Capitol Building. And it’s with heavy hearts that we contemplate what this means for the future of our great nation.
For the first time since 1814, the United States Capitol was breached, but instead of a foreign adversary it was domestic terrorists -- aided and abetted by an outgoing President.
My oath as a Member of Congress is to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Those who sought to overthrow our democracy must be prosecuted. I challenge my colleagues who insist on perpetuating lies about election fraud to come to their senses and put our oath and our democracy first. If they do not, their actions will be remembered shamefully by the generations of Americans who follow us.
As for President Trump, he must be removed from office as soon as possible. Vice President Pence and the Cabinet should invoke the 25th Amendment or Congress should impeach and remove him. Regardless, Trump must go.
Now more than ever, the American people must come together and move beyond this dark period in our history. We can either choose to continue down a path of hyper-partisanship -- which will erode our democracy beyond repair, or, we can put this country on the path of healing.
I’m proud to serve you, and I know we can address and overcome these challenges as a nation -- together.
With you,
Mike
PS. Last night, I wrote an op-ed for the
San Diego Union Tribune while sheltering in place in the U.S. Capitol Complex. You can read my thoughts
