John,
For the first time since the War of 1812, our Capitol was breached yesterday. This attempted insurrection led to bloodshed -- and President Donald Trump did nothing except fuel this violence with his lies.
Denying the truth doesn't change the facts: The American voters have spoken. Trump lost the election. In the early hours this morning, I joined my colleagues in confirming President-elect Joe Biden's victory.
The lawmakers who repeated Trump's lies into the night should be ashamed, and Trump must face the consequences of his actions. I support the Cabinet invoking the 25th Amendment against Trump. If he fights back, I will vote to impeach him, as I did before. And once he is removed, he and the rioters who attacked the Capitol must be criminally prosecuted.
These insurrectionists claim to be patriots. They claim to be pro-police. But they used violence to disrupt our democracy. They attacked police officers. They carried the Confederate flag into our Capitol and desecrated the People's House. These violent actors used their allegiance to Donald Trump as the vehicle for their terrorism. And frankly, had they been Black or brown -- we'd be hearing a different story.
The privilege and double standard that is on display isn't surprising -- it's infuriating. This is the same white supremacy that stole Indigenous lands. Lynched Black folks. Counted us as ⅗ of a person. Burned down Black and brown communities. Stole generational wealth. Redlined communities. Incarcerated generations. Robbed us of basic human rights.
Trump's platform was built on white supremacy. He cozied up to supremacists, stoked these fires -- many of us Black folks saw these consequences coming as we continue to persevere despite the fact. It's a reckoning America must deal with. And while these domestic terrorists tried to take our democracy, it remains to be protected by us.
January 6, 2021, will go down in infamy. These partisan games are dangerous, and actions have consequences. They have yet again robbed the American people of time wasted debating disproven claims of voter fraud when we could've been securing further COVID-19 relief and saving lives.
John, I will not back down. I will fight to make our nation a beacon of liberty, equality, hope, and opportunity for all. I will continue to protect the rights of all Philadelphians. I will continue to call for solutions to the problems facing everyday Americans, and I'll always work to give our neighborhoods a better future.
Now, we move forward,
Dwight
