Statement from Amy Fettig on Yesterday's Attack at the Capitol

Yesterday’s terrifying attack on the Capitol in Washington, DC underscores the importance of The Sentencing Project’s commitment to achieving a more democratic and just nation. As an organization headquartered here, working regularly with Congress, with staff members who call the District of Columbia home, the events are personal and affect us deeply. We prioritize the safety of our staff and community and believe people who violate public safety and fail to uphold the rule of law to protect residents must be held accountable.

For too long this nation has maintained two justice systems, one for white America and one for Black America. Disparate treatment from police, prosecutors and judges has resulted in mass incarceration and a fundamental distrust in law enforcement and the entire criminal justice system. This racism undermines public safety. Together we must confront and end policies, practices and the bias that targets people of color, and makes them unsafe and marginalized in their own communities.

The Sentencing Project will continue to work with Congress, the incoming administration and lawmakers nationwide to restore and expand our democracy and create a country that upholds justice and supports all people.

In solidarity,

Amy Fettig
Executive Director
