Friend,

Like millions across the country and around the globe, I watched with horror and heartbreak yesterday at the mayhem that descended on our nation’s capital. For all of our country’s faults — the myriad sins and transgressions that have slowed our collective march towards delivering true liberty and justice for all — never in my life could I have imagined I’d witness a spectacle like yesterday’s.

I founded New Politics six years ago because I was so dismayed by the erosion of civility and lack of political will in our government. I was so disheartened by the naked partisanship and blind ambition that had become so synonymous with politics; at the contempt for our traditions and institutions being stoked at the highest levels of our government, a posture that undoubtedly led to the chaos we all witnessed today. I stood up this organization with the sole mission of revitalizing American democracy, a long-term project that would call on servant leaders from across the ideological spectrum to again step up in service of their country, and that would require from them, above all, courage.

The kind of political courage that our servant leaders have displayed time and again and that I was so proud to see yesterday from Republican Representatives Mike Gallagher and Peter Meijer, two of just a handful willing to stand up and boldly decry the insurrection taking place. Or the courage of Democratic Representatives Elissa Slotkin and Abigail Spanberger who courageously looked after their staff and ensured the American people stayed informed of what was happening on the floor, and the physical bravery displayed by Representative Jason Crow on the floor of the House as rioters threatened to storm the gallery.

The greatness of America is in our constant striving towards our highest ideals and in the generations of patriots who set aside self-interest for the good of the whole. It’s in the millions of servant leaders who know what it truly means to put service over self, and country over party. Thanks to supporters like you, our work, and this mission to which we’re all so deeply committed, continues.

If you'd like to support the work we do to recruit, advise, and elect servant leaders in poliitics, you can donate here. Alternatively, we encourage you to support servant leaders in the political arena by donating directly to their campaigns.

In service,

Emily Cherniack, Founder and Executive Director
