Friend,
Yesterday was an incredibly emotional and difficult day.
Early in the afternoon afternoon, I was on the House floor, preparing to speak in defense of our democratic process, when I learned a violent mob had breached the U.S. Capitol and was making its way toward the House and Senate chambers.
I was escorted out of the building by Capitol Police, and my staff and I are safe.
I strongly condemn the actions of the pro-Trump rioters, who forced their way into the Capitol, defaced federal property, and threatened the safety of U.S. legislators, staff members, and law enforcement.
Make no mistake, this riot was incited by national Republican leaders like Donald Trump, who have spent the past two months spreading lies and misinformation about the results of the November election in a flagrant attempt to overturn the will of the American people.
I am proud to say that the actions of these terrorists did not stop us from doing our constitutional duty of certifying the electoral college votes. In the face of an unprecedented attack on our democracy, we carried out the will of the people and confirmed Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States.
I am grateful to be safe and that none of my colleagues in the House and Senate were harmed. I promise that as a Member of the United States Congress, I will continue to do everything in my power to uphold the sanctity of our democracy.
Sincerely,
Susan Wild
