Dear John,
The outcome of Tuesday’s Georgia Senate runoff elections makes it clear that we now have an incredible opportunity to advance our Social Security and Medicare agenda in the new Congress to boost benefits, fix the Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), improve the solvency of the Social Security and Medicare Trust Funds, lower prescription drug costs and expand Medicare coverage to include dental, hearing and vision coverage.
And we need newly elected and re-elected lawmakers to act immediately to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare!
Perhaps at no other time since the Great Depression have workers’ and retirees’ earned benefits been so crucial. The pandemic has taken a heavy toll on older Americans — both physically and financially. Before and during this crisis, Social Security and Medicare have functioned as social insurance lifelines, which is, of course, their original purpose.
Valuable as they are, Social Security and Medicare both need enhancements to meet older Americans’ actual needs. Today, too many retirees find themselves unable to afford basics like housing, food and health care, caught between modest fixed incomes and escalating living costs.
Yet our ambitious agenda to provide real relief to older Americans is going to face incredible opposition. That’s because Senator Mitch McConnell, who’s led the charge for so-called “entitlement reform” isn’t going away. He will continue to exert his enormous power and influence in the Senate to obstruct urgently needed improvements to Americans’ retirement and health security.
And powerful fiscal hawks in Congress will continue to point to Social Security and Medicare as the go-to solutions for reining in deficits these programs did not cause in the first place.
That’s why we need Americans like you with the National Committee as we wage this critical battle in Washington for policies that protect — not cut — the earned benefits that Americans have paid for over their entire lives.
Can we count on your support, John?
While President-elect Biden and many members of Congress have indicated they could support many of the critical policies outlined above that are essential to helping our nation’s retirees and workers, we simply cannot take anything for granted …
So please, with so much at stake for millions of older Americans in the weeks and months ahead, I urge you to support the National Committee’s important battle on your behalf by making a donation in any amount you can safely afford today. With your urgent help, we’ll apply maximum constituent pressure on Senator McConnell and his allies in the Senate and House of Representatives to stop obstructing and start helping older Americans!
Sincerely,
|
