Has it only been a week? COVID stimulus whiplash, GA-Sen goes Blue, fascists storm the Capitol.

Let's recap.

Georgia Flips the Senate!

We did it, Georgia! We got rid of two of the biggest ghouls in the Senate in Perdue and Loeffler. We wrested the Leadership from Mitch McConnell. We're about to send our first Black and Jewish Senators to DC.

And we did it together.

This was a huge victory for grass roots democracy. Organizations led by people like Stacey Abrams fought voter suppression. Others worked hard to activate voters in our Latinx communities. Labor groups like UNITE HERE put an incredible amount of resources into the race.

We donated, canvassed, dropped lit, phone banked, text banked, and voted. Big thanks to MADSA members and neighborhood blocks for their hard work.

Fascist Trump supporters storm the Capitol

Yesterday's events at the Capitol in Washington DC were shocking. We're still waiting for the smoke to clear and all of the details to come out, but we know a few things for sure. A fascist mob, egged on by election fraud conspiracy theories pushed by Trump and Congressional Republicans, stormed the Capitol. Their express intent was to impede the peaceful, lawful transition of power. And they succeed, for a few hours. Congress went into lockdown as chaos ensued. Four lives were needlessly lost.

At the time of this writing, the joint session of Congress has reconvened. Shamefully, they ware still working through objections to the Electoral College vote certification made by Republicans, all of which are sure to fail. We have survived a coup, at least for the time being.

On the blog: Don't blame individuals for collective failures

We see the admonitions on social media so frequently that they become background noise: “Wear a damn mask!”, “Stay at home!”. We watch videos of people partying on New Year’s Eve in horror and disgust. We say to ourselves, “How can people be so selfish? How can they be this ignorant? This pandemic is never going to end!”

Comrades, I implore you, do not fall into this trap!

The COVID-19 pandemic is the latest example of how America’s cult of individualism ruins our ability to solve collective problems. Individual action can’t stop a pandemic any more than it can put out a forest fire or fight off a foreign aggressor. Collective problems need collective solutions! Sure, some individuals have acted selfishly. But by focusing all our ire and blame on individuals, we’re turning them into scapegoats. We're allowing our government to get away with a devastating failure to protect the lives of its citizens.
