We started this day with a lot to celebrate. Today was supposed to be the day of the certification of Biden’s victory. Thanks to months of hard work of activists like you, we also took the Senate.  But, as we’ve predicted many times, Trump is doing everything he can to overturn democracy to remain in power.

We are staying vigilant, and we will not allow Trump and his minions to overturn our democracy. We have fought to protect it for 4 years, and we’re not stopping now. And we demand that our Members of Congress do the same - and hold those complicit in this crisis accountable.

Following the events of January 6th, media outlets are reporting that the DC rioters are "proud" of what they accomplished. And, unfortunately, they accomplished a lot of damage. They wanted to block certification of Biden/Harris, and they were able to disrupt and delay it. They wanted to express their antagonism against and contempt for multi-racial democracy and they succeeded.

Media pundits are castigating Capitol Police (USCP) for being "unprepared," for being "incompetent," for "failing." We believe this is not just mere incompetence. With all the warning they had, if they were "unprepared" or "failed" it's because someone high up in their command structure wanted it so. We need to reject the characterization of USCP as "unprepared" or "incompetent" and instead speak of "complicity" and "enabling."

When PG&E put short-term profits ahead of required fire-safety preparations they were not "unprepared" for wildfire season ravages, they were complicit in the inevitable devastation that everyone warned would come -- and courts have held them liable.

So it is with today's mob lynching of democracy in the Capitol. In the words of  our member Bruce Hartford, a veteran of the Freedom Movement that brought civil rights to America in the 60s:

“We of the Freedom Movement know first-hand about white racist mobs. In every single case of large (100+) white-supremacist mob violence, the police and government officials were complicit in enabling and in many cases mobilizing the mob. New Orleans school integration. Authurine Lucy in Tuscaloosa. Freedom Riders in Anniston, Birmingham, Montgomery. Meredith at 'Ole Miss. St. Augustine. Grenada MS. Chicago open-housing marches. Every time the cops enabled those mobs.”

USCP is governed and controlled by Congress. We  demand that our MoC immediately terminate USCP Chief Steven Sund for complete failure to carry out his primary duty to protect Congress, and investigate to what degree Trumpites in USCP enabled a politically-motivated mob to invade and disable Congress.

Call your Members of Congress and tell them: Fire USCP Chief Sund and investigate the Capitol Police for complicity with Trump!

Like many crises before, this one has made clear that every day Trump remains in office is dangerous to America and its people. He must be impeached immediately.

Call your Members of Congress and tell them: Impeach Trump for his attempts to overturn the election!

We are monitoring the situation in DC as it develops, and you will hear from us if there is anything more to do. For now, please stay safe. We are in this together, and we will take care of each other, and will overcome.

Keep Fighting,

The Indivisible SF Team
