Today the outcome of a free and fair election has been violently attacked at the US Capitol. This attack is the result not only of four years of dishonest and divisive leadership from our president, and those who have enabled him but also of many years of attempts to undermine democracy itself and to perpetuate generational and institutional inequities and racism.

There is more to learn about today’s events, and while we await details and a deeper understanding of how this disruption and chaos was allowed to happen, we encourage everyone to stay the course for democracy and justice. Call on North Carolina’s elected officials to publicly denounce what has occurred, and to support the peaceful transfer of power.

The electoral process must proceed, and the results of the 2020 election must be confirmed. Any elected official who suggests otherwise is undermining our country and our Constitution.

We the people … We are the people. We are democracy. We are the change! Let us continue to believe in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “ I refuse to accept the view that Mankind (HumanKind ) is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.”
