Hi Friend,
Today, we watched in horror at the violence that took place in the United States Capitol. Armed men and women stormed the Capitol Building, at least one person was killed, members of Congress and their staff hid, cowered in fear, and multiple explosive devices were found.
These events were horrifying but, given the shocking double standards that our nation has applied to these violent actors, they were also inevitable. Our entire law enforcement establishment, too many elected officials, and social media companies like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter have looked the other way while white nationalists and militias plotted and threatened violence in support of President Trump.
This is not a new phenomenon. For decades, our nation has conducted its analysis of threats through the lens of race, ethnicity, and religion, rather than look at the white nationalists who have actually been planning and perpetrating the deadliest violence in America. As American Muslims and many communities of color can tell you, these threats have always been very real - but too often ignored or downplayed by law enforcement and government officials.
With our partners in the civil rights community, we’ve been sounding the alarm about violent white nationalists for years. Now that they’ve actually attacked the U.S. Capitol, we might finally be heard.
That’s why we are redoubling our efforts to fight for justice in this new era.
We must first and foremost work to restore the rule of law in this nation , and it’s vital that Congress certify the election results immediately.
Social media companies must immediately terminate the accounts of President Trump , whom they’ve allowed to foment bigotry, violence, and conspiracy theories for years. Today, we renewed our call on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to do just that. [[link removed]]
Finally, and this cannot be stressed enough, our entire law enforcement regime must refocus on real threats instead of imagined ones. For too long, public officials and law enforcement have criminalized Muslims and communities of color while they looked the other way as white nationalists and militias have organized, threatened and committed violence. The Biden-Harris Administration will soon oversee our nation’s law enforcement policies, practices and institutions—all of which need to be revisited because they are built on the shakiest of foundations. It’s vital that we continue to hold President Trump accountable for the actions he’s encouraged, but we cannot let it end there. This problem is so much deeper than him—these are problems with our rule of law, with our democracy, with our entire system of law enforcement, and they desperately need to be solved.
We are ready to hold the corporations, Congress and the new administration accountable for ensuring that the attempt to overthrow our government never happens again.
Be safe and be well,
