“I’ve never seen anything like this. The closest thing that comes to mind is my time in Iraq in 2007 and 2008 where elections are quite literally life or death endeavors. This has completely spiraled out of control.”
“For all the overheated rhetoric of life or death elections, I spent a lot of time in countries where elections are quite literally life or death. And we do not want to go down that road, I can assure you and today we took a step down that road. So let's take a step back.”
“I think it's necessary for Congress to send the message that we support the peaceful transition of power, and that we as the federal government, don't have the right to overturn the will of the states and by extension, the American people. That is sort of Schoolhouse Rock, Constitution 101.”
"Make no mistake. The objectors all know this has no chance of succeeding," said Gallagher, referring to those in Congress who wanted to reject Biden's victory in selected states.
“It will be the first time in the last four years I'm encouraging [Trump] to tweet. So go to Twitter and say, ‘it's over. Please go home. Thank you for your support. I support the peaceful transition of power.’”
"We don't think other countries around the world are watching this happen right now?" Gallagher asked, adding: "If we don't think the Chinese Communist Party is sitting back and laughing, we're deluding ourselves."
“This is the cost of this effort. This is the cost of countenancing an effort by Congress to overturn the election and telling thousands of people that there is a legitimate shot of overturning the election today, even though you know it’s not true,” Gallagher said.
Congressman Gallagher will continue to put the Constitution and the safety of the American people before all else.
