John,
We woke up this morning celebrating the first Black senator to ever be elected to represent Georgia. And this afternoon, we also got the historic news of the election of Georgia’s first Jewish senator.
But we've also watched an armed insurrection unfold in front of our eyes. White nationalists brandishing Confederate flags overtaking the halls of Congress. This is not a protest. It is terorrism. It’s treason. Pure and simple.
Today, above all else, we ask you to check in with your friends and family. Stay home and
stay safe. Send a text to the ones that you love. Hold your loved ones close.
Let us be very clear however, this insurrection and coup by hundreds of pro-Trump supporters is one more example of the hypocrisy of law enforcement in this country.
When Black people protest for our lives, we are all too often met by National Guard troops or police equipped with assault rifles, shields, tear gas, and battle helmets. When white people attempt a coup, they are met by an underwhelming number of law enforcement personnel who act powerless to intervene -- going so far as to pose for selfies with terrorists and prevent an escalation of violence like we witnessed today.
Make no mistake, if the protesters were Black, we would have been tear gassed, battered, and perhaps shot.
We are deeply disturbed and horrified. But in times like these, we turn as always to our beloved community.
If you are looking for community right now, we’d encourage you to join us tonight at the Working Families Party tele-townhall with Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, the Movement for Black Lives, The Frontline, and United We Dream at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT today.
Please take care of yourselves and those you love.
We keep us safe,
